Viagra patent expiration

While most of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies would have gladly started producing and selling Sildenafil-based ED meds a long time ago, there is one thing preventing them from doing so. It is the patent that the inventor of Viagra, Pfizer company, obtained back in early 2000s and still holds in some of the countries up to this date.

However, as years go by, Viagra patent expires in more and more countries of the world. In fact, the list of countries where it still remains active is very short today. Surprisingly, it includes the United States – the country that still remains one of the key markets for the manufacturers of Viagra. As for the rest of the world – 2012 was the year of Viagra patent expiration in many European countries and in 2013 the patent was invalidated in Canada and the United Kingdom. The countries like India and China never even considered issuing the patent to Pfizer – generic Viagra appeared there shortly after the introduction of the original brand-name medication and is still sold there in very large amounts. In fact, due to high price, brand-name Viagra is barely sold there at all.

There are a gazillion reasons we can come up with when trying to understand why generic Viagra is still not sold in the US. However, let’s better focus on the possibilities of obtaining it in this country. Quite expectedly, the only source that an American citizen can resort to is the Internet.

When shopping for cheap generic Viagra from the US, you can consider a wide variety of international Canadian pharmacy stores based in neighboring countries where Viagra patent is no longer active. For instance, if you are currently in the US, consider Mexican and Canadian Internet drugstores, which offer a very decent selection of Sildenafil-based ED medications. If you are interested in even lower prices and somewhat higher quality of meds, look at Indian Web stores where meds similar to Viagra are sold at a fraction of the price you are used to seeing in your local pharmacy. However, you should be ready for a longer waiting period – while it takes days to deliver your package over the Mexican or Canadian border and across the States, a shipment from India will most definitely take much longer.

So, is there any hope to see the situation change in the nearest future? Will the Americans have a chance to cut their Viagra expenses thanks to generic meds officially available from drugstores? Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s happening too soon. Viagra patent expiration is not likely to take place there until 2019. Only then will local and foreign drug manufacturers be allowed to produce and market Sildenafil-based ED medications in the States. That sure sounds like a long time and a huge amount of money yet to be spent on overpriced brand-name medication. Of course, there’s always a chance that the patent will be invalidated before its official expiry time (like it was in many other countries). However, with the power that pharmaceutical companies now have in the US, this appears to be very unlikely.
